Description: Greater Androscoggin Humane Society, a well-established no-kill, non-profit organization, operates an
open admission shelter in Lewiston, Maine is seeking a full-time Shelter Veterinarian. GAHS is
committed to saving lives through its aggressive spay/neuter programs. Takes in 4,500 animals a year
and performed 3001 S/N surgeries in 2016. GAHS has a 99% placement rate.

Position Summary:
The Shelter Veterinarian provides medical and surgical care to the shelter residents and pets from its’ outreach program. The GAHS’ Outreach Programs serve trap-neuter-return cats, Wellness , Vaccination and Spay/Neuter Clinics and animal rescue groups. The Shelter Veterinarian is responsible for the development and recommendation of medical and surgical protocols, overseeing the establishment and implementation of approved policies and procedures for effective disease control, pain management, and treatment.

Responsibilities Include:

• Work collaboratively with outside Veterinarians, Director, Managers and Staff to meet program goals and fulfill GAHS’ mission.
• Shelter Veterinarians provide leadership by example for Veterinary Technicians and other staff and work collaboratively with all staff as an integral team member.
• Practice veterinary medicine from a shelter-centered perspective in accordance with GAHS policies and within budget guidelines.
• Responsible for medical and surgical protocols and ensures GAHS’ compliance with state and federal requirements. GAHS protocols will follow shelter medicine best practices to the best of our ability.
• Responsible for daily rounds to assess the health of all shelter animals, provide basic health exams, diagnosis and treatment as necessary.
• Responsible in making sure Veterinary Staff keeps surgery clean and sanitary.
• Provide emergency and non-emergency medical treatment of shelter animals, foster animals, and owned animals through GAHS’ Outreach Programs.
• Perform spay/neuter surgeries on shelter and public animals, including pregnant animals.
• Perform spay/neuter, vaccination and microchip clinics and education through GAHS’ Community Outreach Program.
• Counsel adopters or potential adopters with regards to medical care/needs of shelter animals.
• Oversee the scheduling of outside veterinary resources for procedures not available at GAHS.
• Provide health certificates for any animals crossing state lines.
• Perform humane euthanasia as required.
• Supervise veterinary support staff and volunteers to ensure consistent high quality care.
• Mentor and oversee Veterinary Technicians on animal examination techniques, shelter medicine protocols, surgical preparation, anesthesia monitoring and recovery.
• Ensure medical records in Pet Point are complete and accurate.
• Responsible for meeting DEA requirements and maintaining current licensure.
• Attend staff meetings as needed.
• Perform other various duties as assigned by Executive Director.
• Reports to Operations Manager in absence of Executive Director.

Specific Job Skills:
• Graduate of an accredited school of veterinary medicine.
• Licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Maine or ability to get said license and must complete all professional requirements to maintain their license.
• Enthusiasm for Shelter Veterinary Medicine strongly desired.
• Acquire and possess a thorough understanding of animal welfare in Maine.
• Ability to conduct high quality, high volume surgical sterilizations in a fast paced environment.
• Possess or have the ability to obtain a DEA license.
• Basic computer literacy is required.
• Minimum of two years working in a veterinary clinic, animal shelter, or high-volume spay/neuter clinic preferred.
• Proven organizational skills and effective communication.
• Employees are expected to act in the best interest of GAHS, even if doing so required actions or responsibilities not specifically listed in the job description. The job description is subject to addition, subtraction or revision by the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society.

Physical Requirements:

• Physical ability to walk and/or stand on your feet throughout a normal workday required.
• Ability to lift and carry 50lbs for 100 feet.
• Ability to humanely restrain and work with animals of unknown dispositions and those who may exhibit medical or other problems, as well as aggressive animals.
• Vaccinated for Rabies.

Working Requirements: Possible exposure to infectious organisms, animal waste, allergens, chemical materials requiring OSHA Material Safety Data sheets and potential hostile persons and/or vicious animals.

Schedule Summary:
Minimum of 40 hours per week. Daily hours and days of the week may vary according to the needs of the shelter. Including weekends, night and holiday work.
